The original six-acre Lange Estate Vineyard was planted in 1988 and consisted of three clones available to us back then: Pommard (from David Lett), Wadensvil (from Dick Erath), and a Bien Nacido clone brought up by Don Lange from California.
Through our three decades of growing and crafting wines in the Dundee Hills, we’ve added new acreage and plantings: now encompassing a total of 45 planted considered Estate holdings. Our LIVE certified and Salmon Safe vineyards are three distinct properties: Heritage Vineyard (1988), Mia Blocks (2003), and Redside Vineyard (2007). All sites are farmed on medium-depth Jory soil, roll downhill with a gentle aspect, and face East with a view of snow-capped Mt. Hood. Elevation ranges from 350’ at Redside Vineyard to 825’ at the top of Mia Blocks.
Over a dozen clones of Pinot are planted accross these sites; which, along with various years of plantings, creates a challenge of more than fifty blocks to monitor, farm, pick, and ferment separately, and then watch evolve to express their individuality in the resultant wines.
After months of critical tasting, 30 barrels will make the initial cut for our Estate bottling. After that, another challenging round of blending will leave only the most compelling 18 barrels to be destined for our Lange Estate Pinot noir. We expect this wine to showcase not only the highest quality, but also be an authentic expression of the Dundee Hills appellation and Terroir.
Featuring entirely Dundee Hills fruit, this bottling displays the earthy minerality of the volcanic soils this AVA is known for. Deep aromas of raspberries and dark cherries are laced with notes of blueberry and soft vanilla oak. Intriguing hints of baking spices, earth and minerality are backed with an elegant structure and balanced tannins.
